SKILL LEVEL - all levels.  You don’t need to be an expert seamstress for this workshop, - what is most needed is a sense of fun and willingness to take a risk!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION - In this workshop you will use preloved garments from the op shop, (or possibly from your own wardrobe) to create a new and unique garment for you to wear. The new garment will not necessarily look “recycled”, although it can do, the choice is yours. However it will definitely be interesting, and in your personal style, since you will be the one creating it. You will also be keeping some discarded garments out of landfill in the process. It is estimated that of the clothing donated to op shops in this country, only about one fifth is sold to be reworn, about half ends up as rags or in landfill, while the remainder is exported.

There will be some homework to do before you come to the convention. The tutors will supply detailed notes and photos to help you with this. You will need to visit your local op shops (or your wardrobe) and choose a selection of garments to use in the workshop. You will also need to choose a suitable pattern for your new garment, along with any fastenings, trimmings etc., although often it is best to reuse those on your pre-loved garments. Please note this is not a fitting workshop, you need to have tried the pattern beforehand and be happy with the way it fits you.

We also propose a shopping trip, as part of the workshop, to some op shops near the venue, where we will discuss in person what to consider when choosing supplies. You may like to pick up some more garments to work on either during the convention or as another project at home.

    STUDENT SUPPLY LIST:

In the lead up to the convention, participants will be provided with notes and images to help them choose their materials. Possibly also some online sessions (Zoom or similar) with discussion on choosing donor garments.
