PAST Sew-Alongs

Instructions for Sew-Alongs are available from the online store and are free  for all Guild members.

Beautiful Bound Buttonholes and Perfect Pockets

This is a 'techniques' Sew-Along. You won't be making any garments; instead, you will create a portfolio of samples which you can refer to when you get brave enough to try the techniques in the real thing.

• rectangular and a triangular bound buttonhole (and learn how to finish the facing on the inside of the garment)
• single welt pocket
• double welt pocket
• curved welt pocket
• patch pocket attached with invisible stitching (also called a bluff pocket)

Heirloom Cushion Cover

Make a delightful cushion cover, combining heirloom techniques with precision sewing.
You will create the unique design feature by sewing 'notched tucks'. This is an exercise in precision marking and sewing. Further enhance your cushion cover with lace insertions, a technique used in heirloom sewing.

Chic & Easy Cardigan Jacket

A fashionable cardigan jacket has been a wardrobe staple for decades and today is worn in settings from professional to dressy to weekend casual. The couture method of making this garment is a slow and painstakingly meticulous process. Now you can make this designer jacket from a knit fabric, combining the style and versatility of a structured jacket with the comfort of a cardigan.

Parisienne Tote

Wouldn't you just love a shopping trip in Paris? If that's not possible, how about this gorgeous Parisienne shopping tote that folds up into a pouch? It's super easy to sew; the extra little twist is the pretty picture. You get to print this yourself - on fabric, using freezer paper and an inkjet printer.
This project is suitable for beginner sewists and is a fun sew for the more experienced.

• learn how to achieve perfect points on your collar
• interfacing techniques for the collar
• how to mitre hem corners for a professional look
• tips for buttonholes and attaching buttons

Pleated Skirt

In this sew-along you will make a knife-pleated skirt with a yoke. You will create a skirt yoke, using the provided calculator to input your measurements and then draft the pattern. A calculator is also provided to determine how much fabric is required for the 'kilt' (pleated part) of the skirt. Your fabric will be sent to a pleaters to create the knife pleats.

Cosmetic Bag & Lipstick Holder

A cosmetic bag with a difference. The fold-out flap has pockets for storing your makeup brushes. The matching lipstick holder is a compact size that slips inside the cosmetic bag....or lives in your handbag. It holds 3 tubes of lipstick and a lip liner pencil. The mesh pocket is perfect for a folding mirror.

Sheer Simplicity

Are you terrified of sheer fabric? The trick to gaining confidence is to start with the right type of fabric and a simple design. This Sew-Along will guide you through the process of making a basic sleeveless top.
You will learn:
• tips for cutting sheer fabric
• stabilising neckline and armholes
• sewing a French seam, and French-seamed darts
• sewing a hairline seam
• rolled hems by hand or sewing machine
• binding raw edges - mastering a flat binding without ripples

Couture Cardigan Jacket

This Sew-Along is divided into 11 parts and is quite labour intensive. It is designed for the confident sewist who wants to take their skills to the next level. You will make a classic Chanel-inspired cardigan jacket, employing traditional couture methods.

T-Shirt With a Twist

Start with your favourite basic T-shirt pattern, slice it up the back and add a unique design feature. It looks complicated, but you will be amazed how easy it is to create.

Cowl Neck Knit Top

Learn pattern drafting skills and pick up tips on working with knit fabric. You will learn:
• how to convert a basic T-shirt pattern into a cowl neck top
• several finishing techniques for the neck edge
• seam and hem finishing techniques

Vionnet-Inspired Bias Skirt

In this sew-along you will draft a pattern and make a bias-cut skirt based on a design by Madeleine Vionnet (1876 – 1975).
A typical bias-cut skirt is made from a full circle of fabric. The centres front and back are on the straight of grain, the sides are on the cross grain, and in between are varying degrees of bias.
Vionnet’s skirt has a 2-piece yoke with grainlines oriented differently from the lower portion of the skirt. The lower skirt is made from 3 pieces to better manipulate the volume and drape of the fabric. An added advantage for the home sewist is that the seaming enables you to make this skirt from fabric of standard widths – either 115 cm 140 cm.

Guipure Lace Jacket

Create an elegant jacket from Guipure lace backed with sheer tulle. You will learn how to manipulate the lace motifs to create what appears to be a seamless garment. Be prepared for lots of hand sewing as this is a couture garment.

Some techniques are suited to beginners, while others are more advanced. You're free to pick and choose which ones you'd like to try. If you are new to sewing, begin with the basic techniques.
