A good machine-sewn buttonhole has a two-part goal: It should emulate fine ready-to-wear, and it ought to stand up over time without fraying or gaping.

Topics covered:

  • Components of a buttonhole and how to adjust the stitches for different fabrics
  • Types of buttonholes and choosing the correct one for your fabric
  • Choosing the right thread
  • Compensating for thick fabric
  • Using stabilisers
  • Automatic vs manual buttonholes
  • Cutting open a buttonhole
  • Unpicking a buttonhole that didn’t work

For most projects, the buttonholes are the last detail, a scary prospect if you’re nervous about making a mistake at the end. We’ll explore how to confidently sew them as a project’s finishing touch.
