What’s happening at AUSSEW?

Our Social Sewing Groups around Australia are the heart of the Guild. Each group meets on a regular basis and this is where friendships develop and thrive. In addition to these meetings, other special events are a highlight of our annual calendar – retreats, workshops, on-line sew-alongs, conventions, fabric shopping tours and more.

You don’t have to be a member to attend a special event, but you will not be eligible for the discounted fees given to members.  We hope you enjoy yourself enough to join AUSSEW.

SKILL LEVEL - all levels welcome

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION  - Janet will introduce Connie Crawford's patterns, which have been draped onto real women, not using flat pattern techniques.  This method gives real fit to real women, no matter your size or shape.  Connie's fit will change the way you sew and restore the joy of sewing, so you can just "cut it out, sew it up and wear it"!

Each participant will be fitted into a blouse block to their measurements and suited to their shape.  Then a personalised block pattern will be created which will form the basis of future patterns and enable students to design their own garments.

Various methods for using the blouse block will be discussed, and pattern-making resources explained.

SKILL LEVEL - previous sewing and dressmaking experience required - intermediate level

PRE-WORKSHOP To make the most out of this class, students must purchase the Paxton Jacket pattern and fit a sample garment/toile prior to the start date.  Participants will be given access to an online course which will help with  fitting of the toile.  This online course also gives you access to Aneka for help and support should you not be able to complete your jacket in the 3-day workshop.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Make a leather jacket and learn first-hand how to speed tailor a professional looking garment.  The Paxton Jacket (from Made to Sew) can be made in your choice of leather, vegan leather or fabric.

The jacket is created using top quality professional interfacing, with the addition of shoulder pads and sleeve heads.  The jacket is fully lined and is constructed with a bagged lining technique.  You will learn how to sew a notched collar, attach a front zip fastening, introduce zip fastened welt pockets and zip fastened gussets on the sleeve cuffs.

During the course you will learn to understand the concept of speed tailoring and how you can apply these techniques to future garments.  The pattern is designed to be constructed from leather and therefore can be sewn without any hand sewing.  However, hand-sewing techniques may be adopted should individuals prefer.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION - Alabama Chanin stitching is a fabric embellishment technique done entirely by hand.  This workshop is a leisurely exploration of the joys of "slow Sewing" - not a machine in sight!

Participants will begin by practicing 4 basic stitches using embroidery cotton.  They will also learn how to incorporate beading when using these 4 stitches.

The next step will be learning how to stencil fabric using permanent markers and fabric pain.

Participants will then build a folder of samples - quilting, various applique techniques, reverse applique and negative reverse applique.

Lastly, participants will explore the addition of sequins and beads to a stitched design.
